Emerging from the grime of Portland’s early-2000s underground, THE RIFFS built their reputation on anarchic rock ’n’ roll that’s straightforward, catchy, captivating and raw as fuck. Their debut album Underground Kicks has long been hailed as a modern punk classic, a 21st century answer to ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’, cementing the band as cult heroes on both sides of the Atlantic.
Drawing heavily from the fury and swagger of late ’70s British punk, THE RIFFS fused the sneer of the SEX PISTOLS, the chaos of THE DEAD BOYS, the attitude of JOHNNY THUNDERS & THE HEARTBREAKERS and the melodic punch of THE BOYS into something unmistakably their own — street-level punk rock born out of the Pacific Northwest.
Now, after years away, THE RIFFS return with a brand new single. Three songs (2 originals and a Professionals cover) that sound like they never left and delivered with the same reckless urgency that made them legendary in the first place. In the band’s own words:
“Since FYWROK and Alex Hagen convinced us to do one last show, a dozen shows ago, we have been overwhelmed by the support and dedication to THE RIFFS still out there. We would never take that for granted so we thought long and hard about releasing anything new. We think these songs not only live up to our original records, they are some of our best. This single is for all the kamikazes. A tribute to those who have passed and a celebration of those who are still around. For all of us who can’t escape the music or the streets that shaped our lives.”
THE RIFFS never belonged to nostalgia. They belong to the streets and to the kids who still believe punk rock should feel dangerous and now they’re back to remind everyone.
